English as a Medium of Instruction is a recently developed bilingual teaching-method. The main idea of EMI is to combine the conventional instruction of content-area subjects with foreign language-learning: instead of the mother-tongue, a foreign language is used as a ‘tool’ for communication in different subjects. The concept of EMI was promoted by the Austrian Ministry of Education to improve and intensify foreign language education at schools. During the last decades powerful communication technologies have been developed and improved.
