The relationship between second language teaching and learning and the subject matter or ‘content’ of the mainstream curriculum has long been an area of interest and concern for applied linguists and second language teachers. In this paper I will examine a framework for articulating this relationship in English as a second language (ESL) contexts, and how it might apply to the Malaysian educational context, where English is not the dominant language and would be better described as a foreign language or maybe an international language.
