CLIL Practice: Perspectives from the Field does not aim to be a state-of-the-art description of CLIL. It seeks to open a window on current practitioner understandings and practices in the field of CLIL in Europe. Simultaneously, these multiple perspectives provide points of reference for discussion by CLIL practitioners about CLIL practice. In particular, this book hopes to engage CCN members in a critical dialogue about what is required to develop quality CLIL programming in a variety of different contexts.

 The selection of web resources on this site has been made in the hope that they can be used for independent learning and individual development of the specific language and teaching competences that each teacher needs in his/her specific CLIL situation.

The overall aim of PROCLIL is to develop and investigate aspects of CLIL methodology, find ways to successfully implement CLIL in preprimary and primary education and to design teaching materials and an initial and in-service course for teachers.  

More specifically the objectives of the project are: 

  • to investigate various CLIL implementation models and styles
  • to identify practical and other problems in implementing this methodology and suggest solutions to problems that may be detected
  • to identify good practice in CLIL implementation
  • to investigate the effectiveness of CLIL as regards the learning of content
  • to develop appropriate teaching materials.
  • to investigate students’, teachers’, parents’ and administrators’ perceptions and attitudes towards CLIL
  • to develop a teacher training course and produce a handbook for teachers with guidelines for CLIL implementation

By achieving the above goals the project aims to increase young children’s exposure to foreign languages and thus help towards the long-term fight against racism and xenophobia. The project hopes to help improve the quality of language teaching through the implementation of CLIL in preprimary and primary education and to generate knowledge as to the specific methodology which can help the teaching of further languages and strengthen first foreign language in primary school so that  a second foreign language can be more easily and confidently introduced.   

The program’s target groups are pre-primary and primary school teachers, student teachers, administrators, policy makers and training providers

ELTeCS (English Language Teaching Contacts Scheme) is an information-sharing and teacher development network. Through ELTeCS, ELT professionals can make new contacts, share information, build their knowledge, and create partnerships.

Team Teaching CLIL-AXIS -project started in November 2003. It is a three-year pilot project funded by the European Union Leonardo da Vinci Programme. It aims at presenting best practice examples of Team Teaching as a CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) method in the world of professional education and work. The target groups are vocational educators who teach content through a foreign language, language teachers, and working life representatives who co-operate in the planning and implementation of educational programmes.

BILD (bilingual integration of languages and disciplines)- European Teacher Training Project co-ordinated by the University of Nottingham and also to an innovative initial teacher training course run at the School of Education.

The relationship between second language teaching and learning and the subject matter or ‘content’ of the mainstream curriculum has long been an area of interest and concern for applied linguists and second language teachers. In this paper I will examine a framework for articulating this relationship in English as a second language (ESL) contexts, and how it might apply to the Malaysian educational context, where English is not the dominant language and would be better described as a foreign language or maybe an international language.

Integrated language and content instruction provides opportunities for learners to acquire a new language through the study of academic disciplines such as mathematics, science, and history. Also known as content-centered or content-based language learning, this approach is an effective way for both English language learners and learners of other languages to develop their language skills and their academic skills at the same time. Programs that use content-centered language learning include total and partial immersion, two-way (dual) immersion, bilingual education, sheltered English, and many early foreign language programs (e.g., content-based FLES).
